Granite processing from raw stone to aggregate

Granite is one of the most durable and widely used construction materials globally, valued for its hardness, aesthetic appeal, and resistance to weathering. Processing raw granite into aggregate—sized stones used in concrete, asphalt, and road construction—requires a systematic approach involving multiple stages of crushing, screening, and shaping.

Primary Crushing

Large granite rocks (typically 500–1500mm) first undergo primary crushing, usually performed by a jaw crusher or gyratory crusher. These machines reduce the granite to smaller chunks (~100–300mm) suitable for secondary crushing.

Secondary Crushing & Shaping

The crushed granite then moves to cone crushers or impact crushers, which further reduce the material to smaller sizes (~20–50mm). At this stage, granite may also be shaped using specialized equipment like VSI (Vertical Shaft Impact) crushers to produce high-quality cubical aggregates ideal for concrete and asphalt mixes.

Screening & Gradation

Before final use, crushed granite must be precisely sized. Vibrating screens separate the material into different grades (e.g., 0–5mm sand, 5–10mm gravel, 10–20mm, and 20–40mm stones). Proper grading ensures compliance with construction standards such as ASTM or EN.

Sand Making (Optional)

If fine aggregates like artificial sand are needed, granite particles can be further processed using sand-making machines. These produce well-graded sand with optimal grain shape, enhancing concrete workability and strength.

Washing & Dust Control

To remove impurities (clay, dust, or fine particles), granite aggregates may undergo sand washing or air classification. This step is crucial for high-end construction projects requiring superior-quality aggregates.

Final Products

Granite aggregate comes in various sizes and forms, including:

  • Coarse aggregates (for concrete and road bases)
  • Fine aggregates (sand for mortar and plastering)
